The Legend of Pinocchio

The Centre is proud to present an original musical play: THE LEGEND OF PINOCCHIO: A NEW MUSICAL ABOUT BECOMING REAL.

Pinocchio is a story about what it is to be human, as well as a great adventure tale. The story was originally written as a serial for a children's magazine in Italy in 1881. Scenes from Pinocchio reference themes from Dante's Divine Comedy, and the biblical story of Jonah and the whale. Philosopher Benedetto Croce writes: "The wood of which Pinocchio is carved is our very own humanity."

For our production, we have gone back to the original Italian version by Caro Collodi, which differs from contemporary popular interpretations of the tale. From it, we have taken the theme of becoming real. Like all of us, Pinocchio makes mistakes, but through courage, unselfish love, kindness, and honesty, he realizes what it really means to be human.
