I. Synopsis
Oh! That Aladdin...was
developed with an original script and was directed by certified
drama therapist Dr. Stephen Snow. Its original musical
score was created by professionals Shelley Snow (music)
and Roger Jay (lyrics). Its purpose was to allow new actors
with intellectual and other disabilities to participate in theatrical
performance. The theme of the show is self-esteem and how one
young rogue, Aladdin, is able to win the heart of a princess by
learning to rely on himself and his inner strength.
We used an integrated model whereby
students in theatre worked as supportive chorus members while
the (disabled) actors took on all major roles. There have been
seven performances over the past two years, reaching an approximate
audience of 2000 people. Showing the abilities of people with
disabilities in such an inspirational and uplifting way was educational
and moving for all: audience, actors, students, and production
staff.

II. Accomplishments:
This special theatrical production
captured the interest of the media in our city - on television
and radio, in the newspaper, and in a documentary on CBC's The
National.
The effect on the actors was astonishing.
Hidden talents emerged, personalities changed, and people increased
in self-esteem and confidence. The actors gained valuable skills
which they were able to transfer into their everyday lives.
The Oh! That Aladdin...
cast and Lenore Vosburg, social worker and initiator of the project,
were nominated for a provincial competition called Gala
Défi '97: an occasion to honour those who have
made significant contributions in the field of intellectual disability.
This competition is sponsored by the Fédération
Québécoise de la déficience intellectuelle
in collaboration with the Association du Québec pour
l'intégration sociale. The Oh!
That Aladdin... team was a finalist.

III. Here We Go! "Oh That Aladdin Lives!"
After much hard work and determination,
the production of Oh! That Aladdin...was born.
