The Centre for the
Arts in Human Development at Concordia University in Montreal,
opened its doors in 1996 and offers a program that is unique in
Canada. Our mission is to promote personal development for special
populations through the creative arts therapies, including drama,
art, music, and dance/movement, in an educational setting.
The Centre provides clinical internships for as many as ten graduate
students in the creative arts therapies. These interns are students
of the Masters Program in Creative Arts Therapies offered by
the Department of Fine Arts at Concordia University.
The participants at the Centre are primarily adults with developmental
or psychiatric disabilities who are referred from vocational,
hospital or residential settings in the Montreal area. Participants
attend on a part time basis each week during the University's academic
year.
The Centre conducts original research, supervised by the
Education Department of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Concordia
University. Our research focuses on the efficacy of the creative
arts therapies to improve quality of participants' self-esteem,
self-image and quality of life.
At the end of each academic year, the Centre stages a Public
Outreach Program to showcase the creative abilities of the participants
in the program. On alternate years, the Centre offers an Open
House during which the four types of creative arts therapies
are demonstrated to the public, and our financial supporters are
given well-deserved recognition.
Every second year, the Centre mounts an original musical show
with our participants as the lead performers. The shows are based
on classic stories with themes of finding inner strength and having
the courage to realize ones dreams.
The Centre developed and performed the following live shows:
