| The Centre for the Arts in
Human Development is an innovative project affiliated with
the Faculty of Fine Arts of Concordia University
in Montreal. The Centre utilizes the creative arts therapies and
applies them to promote growth and development for people with intellectual,
developmental and mental health disabilities.
We are a team of professionals dedicated to furthering the mandate of the Centre. Our team consists of a certified drama therapist, an educational psychologist, an art therapist (all of whom are professors at Concordia University, a well-known Canadian university). The project initiator is a social worker who works directly with disabled people in the community. Our team also includes a certified music therapist and a certified dance/movement therapist.

We help our clients move through personal challenges toward the goal of increased self-esteem and social integration. The Universitys educational milieu affords our clientele an excellent opportunity for self-expression and self-enhancement in a supportive environment. Concordia University students are enriched by their educational and personal exposure to the use of the creative arts therapies: drama, art, music and dance.
A part of our mission at the Centre
is to provide an opportunity for university students to work alongside
our client population as a mutual learning experience. With help
of our student interns, we conduct ongoing research documenting
the effectiveness of creative arts therapies in changing behavior
and productivity in adults with intellectual and related disabilities.
Ongoing research supports our
experience that the creative arts therapies are dynamic and
powerful tools in helping adults with disabilties become more
involved in their community, increasing self-esteem.
